ActiveX and object detection

The best thing Microsoft could do for cross-browser scripting on the web must be to make object detection play well with ActiveX-objects. Could we have that in IE7?
For example, this should not cause an exception in IE:

var a=new ActiveXObject('Microsoft.XMLHTTP');
if( a.setRequestHeader ){}

Aside: I post this from a mobile. Painfully slow blogging…

  1. Yes, that's good news and should help with this specific issue but I guess it will remain impossible to use plugin detection properly on CSS filters, plugin methods and other stuff that is ActiveX under the hood. 😦
